It\u2019s important they feel welcome and effectively onboarded into the workplace. This is especially true for immigrant employees, who may need more guidance with expectations around work systems, culture, and the rules of the organization \u2014 both written and unwritten. This is easy to overlook when the workforce is made up primarily of individuals who share a cultural background.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensuring that the following items are addressed can help increase performance and improve the adjustment period. For all new hires consider providing:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"border-left-color:var(--wp--preset--color--yellow);border-left-width:5px;padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20)\">\n<ul style=\"padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\n<li>Company overview \u2013 product information, services, clientele, and history.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personal introductions to company employees and descriptions of their roles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employee handbooks or other &#8220;policies and procedures&#8221; documents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discussion on how best to navigate workplace culture from colleagues and supervisors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workplace tour (and map) that includes all facilities, staff rooms, exits, entrances, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An organizational chart \u2013 chain of command and who reports to whom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Equipment usage policies and instructions, including cell phones, computers, copiers, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The location of supplies\/equipment and procedures for accessing them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Information on pay schedules, time-off requests, benefits, expense accounts, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emergency, security, and health &amp; safety policies and procedures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A list of company-specific terms, acronyms, and abbreviations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accommodation for religious or cultural practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress-820531-4055564.cloudwaysapps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/0622-6-welcoming-workplaces-v3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>this downloadable PDF<\/strong><\/a> on how to create a welcoming environment for new hires.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Source: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wes.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Education Services<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-5 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Online Considerations&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Onboarding new employees remotely can be a challenge to the forming of relationships built on trust. Communication is even more important in a remote environment, so be sure to share the ways your team communicates. For example, perhaps email is used for more formal requests, whereas instant messaging is used for more informal, discussion-based communication.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some other ways to build employee relationships remotely:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"border-left-color:var(--wp--preset--color--yellow);border-left-width:5px;padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20)\">\n<ul style=\"padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\n<li>Share contact information for managers, IT support, and HR.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create a directory and organizational chart that includes photos, employee information, and fun facts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Schedule virtual \u201cwater cooler\u201d chats and encourage staff to share their non-work-related interests such as recipes or book and film recommendations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Source: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wes.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Education Services<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">People, Performance, and Paperwork&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During the orientation process, consider the \u201cThree Ps\u201d\u2014people, performance, and paperwork:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who are the key people whom any new employee must meet, what will those meetings look like, and when should they occur? Examples include informal social events, group onboarding activities, assigning a buddy, meetings with senior leaders, team building, mentoring, and other key meetings.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is required to support any new employee in the performance of their role? Examples include job shadowing, setting expectations and providing feedback, HR check-ins, coaching, and other training.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, what paperwork and processes must be reviewed, completed, and explained?
