Taxes are collected in different ways.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a factsheet highlighting the benefits and credit payments that newcomers can apply for and receive. The HST amount is not usually included on the price tag, so the final sale price at the cash register will include an additional 13%. Some purchases are exempt from HST, including food products, child-care services, and prescription drugs. A portion of the HST (8%) goes to the provincial government, and the remaining 5% goes to the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">Income Tax<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In Canada, a portion of each employee&#8217;s income is considered taxable.&nbsp; Most employees choose to have this amount deducted directly off their paycheque.&nbsp; Others choose to calculate what they owe when they file their annual taxes and pay the difference at that time. The amount of property tax a property owner needs to pay depends on the assessed value of the property and the local property tax rate, which is set by individual municipal governments. Employment Insurance provides temporary financial assistance to unemployed workers. Workers who are sick, pregnant, or caring for a newborn or adopted child, as well as those who must care for a family member who is seriously ill with a significant risk of death, may also be assisted by Employment Insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eligibility requirements depend on where you live and the type of benefits for which you are applying.&nbsp; Always apply for Employment Insurance benefits as soon as you stop working. You can apply for benefits even if you have not yet received your Record of Employment. Ontario Works employment assistance helps people to become and stay employed, and includes employment activities such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Job search support services<\/li>\n<li>Employment information session<\/li>\n<li>Community participation (i.e. activities that allow people to contribute to the community and improve their employability)<\/li>\n<li>Employment placement and job retention services<\/li>\n<li>Supports for self-employment development<\/li>\n<li>Referral to basic education<\/li>\n<li>Young parenting program (Learning, Earning and Parenting, or LEAP)<\/li>\n<li>Literacy and job-specific skills training<\/li>\n<li>Screening for substance abuse and referral to assessment and treatment if necessary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The appropriate mix of employment assistance activities depends on the experience, skills, circumstances, and needs of individual applicants or participants and the realities of the local labour market. Ontario Disability Support Program Employment Supports can help you get ready for a new job or a training program, and can help you keep your job if you are at risk of losing it. Depending on your situation, you can work and receive Income Support at the same time.
