Apprenticeships and Skilled Trades

Apprenticeship and Skilled Trades – Information for Employers

Local employers may soon face difficulties finding skilled trade workers, as Baby Boomers begin to exit the workforce in record numbers. A solution may be to consider hiring immigrant apprentices or individuals trained abroad in different skilled trades.

Apprenticeship training in Ontario is administered through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU). An apprenticeship is a relationship between an employer, an apprentice, and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. A consultant from MTCU will help an employer develop a training agreement.

The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities has produced fact sheets on the 58 trades that have the most apprenticeship registrations. To find more about these trades, go to: Trades in Ontario.
