Volunteering

Volunteering is unpaid work. Volunteering offers you an opportunity to build personal and professional networks and learn more about your new community. Volunteer positions are often offered by non-profit or charity organizations.

Through volunteering you can:

  • Practice English or French
  • Meet new people
  • Gain Canadian work experience
  • Locate potential job leads
  • Learn new skills
  • Develop existing skills
  • Feel more connected to the community

Many employers accept volunteering as valid Canadian work experience.  It is an opportunity to gain Canadian experience and Canadian references.

It is important for you to know what you are committing to when you volunteer.  Ask the organization what their expectation are and what they can offer you. A good place to look for volunteer opportunities is www.volunteerconnection.ca.

Some people find volunteer opportunities through community service clubs like the Kiwanis ClubRotary Club and Lions Club. Some community service clubs are international and have chapters in local communities. Other community service clubs are locally established.
