Health811 is a free and confidential telephone service that provides health advice or general health information from a Registered Nurse, and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Health insurance is not required to use Health811. This service provides advice about health-related concerns such as health symptoms, illness, injury, nutrition, and healthy lifestyles.  Information is available in English and French, and translation support is available for other languages.

Family Health Care Provider


A family health care provider, such as a family doctor, provides health care to you and your family, including health advice, examinations, prescriptions, vaccinations, and referrals to other health specialists, programs, and service.  A family health care provider will understand your health history and provide ongoing care.

Do you have a question about your health or the health of your family?  Health Connection is a local service, provided by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. It is staffed by nurses and public health inspectors who can help you get the information and advice you need, and connect you with community programs and services.

They can answer questions about:

  • immunizations
  • parenting
  • breastfeeding and child nutrition
  • common illnesses and infections
  • well water testing, and more.

They can connect you with:

  • prenatal classes and parenting programs
  • quit smoking workshops
  • immunization clinics
  • sexual health clinics
  • inspectors for safe food and water, and more.

Walk-in/After Hours Clinics


A walk-in /after hours clinic provides access to medical advice, assessment and treatment for minor illnesses and injuries such as cuts, bruises, minor infections, sprains and skin conditions. An experienced nurse or doctor is available, and an appointment is not necessary. You can also visit a walk-in/after hours clinic if you don’t currently have a family doctor or if your doctor’s office is closed.

Emergency trained doctors and other health care professionals are available at urgent care centres to treat urgent but non-life threatening illnesses or injuries, such as sprains, strains, minor burns and/or injuries that require stitches.

Hospitals and Emergency Rooms


Hospitals provide a number of programs and services that vary depending on the needs of the community. Programs and services can include emergency services, mental health and addiction, critical care, family birthing units, paediatric care, surgeries, or rehabilitation therapy services.

The Emergency Room (ER) at the hospital is for medical emergencies and for patients with a serious injury or illness. An emergency room doctor or nurse will assess the patient’s condition and decide on the required medical treatment.  The emergency room is open 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week and no appointment is needed.  When you call 911 on the telephone for emergency services, the ambulance will take you to the emergency room at a hospital.
